What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CO

Is there a legal and ethical way to help a 16 year old protect the money she is earning from her mother?

This young lady is a hard worker, recently lost her dad and her mother is "losing it". Her survivor benefits are disappearing quickly (her mother has begun drinking heavily) and she wants to know if there is a way to open a bank account that would be protected from her mother.

I guess I'm asking if another adult who is not her legal guardian can co-sign on a bank account for this 16 year old?

Thanks for any help

Who are you to this girl, and why do you think it's your job to interfere?

What hard evidence do you have that the mother is drinking and the survivor benefits are "disappearing quickly" because of the mother?

Why would you think that a bank would "protect" a 16 year old's account from the mother?

Why would an adult who's not her legal guardian, relative (etc., etc.) be allowed to co-sign her bank account?

Your behavior is very odd. And fishy.

The girl may be going after her survivor benefits, which may or may not be a savings account.

I'd like to know why the OP is so involved.
