When my daughter was about one month old a 96 count box of "Huggies, Ultratrim" diapers was purchased for us by my mother-in-law. She purchased another when she was about ten months old. Between these two boxes of diapers I used approximately 120 of them (I still have the remainder). Of those 120 I had about 15 of the fastening tabs pull off when I went to fasten it upon its initial use, 1 came out already missing its tab, and one I my daughter had pulled off and was chewing on when I went to get her following her nap. I sent 3 complaints through their website on 5/3/2004, another on 5/5/2004, I also snail-mailed them a letter on 5/5/2004. I received no response so I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau of WI which they received on 5/17/2004. In all of these I included all of my contact information. By 5/19/2004 I still had not heard from them so I called and talked to one of their, almost pointless, complaint reps. I was of course told that I would receive a coupon for a new box of diapers and some cash off coupons. I proceeded to tell them that my concern was that this poses a choking hazard to children and that I would like to be notified of what action would be taken to rectify the situation. I was told that it was probably an isolated incident, that they would only take action if they saw a pattern, and that they are to overwhelmed with calls to respond to me. I don't know that I want to sue them but I would like to see that they take some action to prevent what could easily cause someone's child to choke. I would like to know what steps I should take. I have the letter that I sent to them if it would help.

**A: contact the Consumer Product Safety Commission and inquire there.

Thanks for the reply, the cpsc sounds like a very promising route.

I've had that happen too...

I know exactly what you're talking about....
Huggies uses those velcro "flex-tabs" that stretch to make the diaper supposedly more comfortable for the child but, you're right. I've used diapers like those (and Huggies isn't the only brand that is designed like this-I got a package of Target name brand which are the same design) and the cloth-like, perforated "flex-tabs"tear pretty easily. They tear much more easily than the usual plastic tape tabs which virtually never tear (although I've had those tear away from the diaper too, especially when the diaper is very wet).
I think they are a choking hazard too.

Not legal advice at all...

I agree about Huggies Ultrtrim - all Huggies diapers, really. I never used them after the first couple of tabs ripped off; switched to Luvs, and then, to save money, a walmart brand that was just the same as Luvs. Glad to see that you are doing something about it, MotherWit. Those tabs really do pose as a choking hazard.

Just wanted to put my (worthless) 2 cents in.

Walmart brand (not legal comment either)

Yup...I use that Walmart brand too...yellow package and their called "Dri-bottoms".
The tabs (plain old plastic tape tabs) are pretty secure in my experience and may be a better option for many moms opposed to diapers that pose a choking hazarad.

Well it's not an isolated incident because I can also be added to the list of having those tabs rip off. I hate Huggies diapers and stopped using them after trying a few bags of them. They also leak really bad. I don't understand why they are so popular or why anyone would buy them. I went from Huggies to Pampers then to Luvs just to save a little money. I've never tried the Dri Bottoms. Are they really as good as Luvs?

LMSP-

I agree about huggies leaking - they most certainly do, and there is NO reason for all the fuss over them. Honestly, yes, Dri-bottoms are just as good as Luvs. My daughter is 3 1/2, so it's been 2 years since I've used diaps, but I always used dri-bottoms after 3 months. They really are just as good, and the price (2 years ago anyway) is even better, something like 10.00 for the big package. You know how some diapers leave those red marks on the baby's legs? Dri-bottoms didn't do that to my daughter. Try them out, I think you'll be pleased with the results. :)

Just wait until we start discussing the pros and cons of tampons and panty liners!

Well I've been using Dri Bottoms since the 25th and I cringe to think of all the money I have wasted because I was a snob and didn't want my baby wearing Wal Mart diapers.. They really are as good as name brand diapers. I've started potty training now so hopefully I won't be buying them too much longer though.

I knew you wanted to know the results, HG. :D

Glad to hear it, LMSP! And good luck with the potty training.

So do you want to start a tampon discussion now, or later? Maybe potty training stories??
