 What is the name of your state?I live in Mississippi. I am a single parent of a 6 year old. His father and i were never married. We have been seperated for 5 years. My son recieves medicaid from MS, and they say that if you get approved they will go after the absent parent for child support...but in my case they have not done a single thing. I have provided all the information needed to find his father even told them where they could find him. The only thing I have not done yet is drag his sorry butt up to the DHS offices. I dont have the money to hire a lawyer. So my question is: How do I go about getting child support? Where do I start? I have no idea about any of this stuff. Please Help! Thanks, Tonia

Who did you give the dads info to, was it the office where you registered for Medicaid or was it the child support office? The Children and Families office where you requested Medicaid does not automatically file for child support for you. If you get cash assistance they will make an appt for you to go to the child support office. If you are not or have not received the cash assistance you must make the appt yourself.

Our DHS and child support office is in one building. When I went to apply for medicaid they said I would have to fill out the paper work for them to file for child support before i could get medicaid. I have had to do this every year when i renew his medicaid. A couple times a yera i get something in the mail asking for and update on the fathers information. I fill it out and send it in and still never hear anything from them.

have you called the child suppport office and ask what they are doing for the case? Sometimes you really have to stay on them to get them moving. Has paternity been established yet?

I have not tried to call them. I will try that today and see what they can tell me. He signed the birth certificate when he was born. He has never denied he was the father. The only other way of getting child support would be to get a lawyer? Thank you for all of your help.

I don't really think they're that interested in getting child support for YOU. They want to get back from him what they are paying for your child.

Thats probably true. I have talked to him a while back and as far as he told me they have not done anything to him. He has not heard a word from them. I ust called the offices and they said they would pull my case and set up an appointment if needed. Which I think i have done the appointments 3 or 4 times now. I am just getting fed up with all this. I guess I need to just go and hire a lawyer. Thanks for your help.

YOU need to file for support.
Go to the building where the office is and instead of going to the welfare office, go to the child support office.
You do not need a lawyer for this, you need some initiative.

Beleive me I have done this. I have gone to the Child Support Offices. And they give me the same run around everytime. It has been 5 years and they have not done anything to my knowledge. I really would prefewr to not get a lawyer, I cannot afford one at this time. Thats why I am trying to seek child support. And another thing I just found out, his father has been filinf him on his income taxes. I had no knowledge of this. I don't file any taxes, i have not worked, I am a stay at home mom. What should I do about this?

I just thought it was wrong. He does not give a peeny to his son. He never sees his son. Why should he benifit from it? From what I have heard he must have his son living with him 6 months out of the year to file on him. my son has not spent 3 nights with him in 5 years. I dont know anything about all this really. I just want for my son to get what he is entitled to.

I am currently enrolled in school, and my fiance provides for us. But i feel it is not his responsibility. I have called them this morning and they said if they needed to they would set me up an appointment.
