Have they requested a DNA test? Even though he signed the birth certificate that doesnt legally make him dad, even if he isnt questioning the fact. Child Support will still require a DNA test. After that is complete and you have the results then they can set the hearing for a support amount. You have to get child support on the ball. You said that you have had a couple of appts with Child Support. What did they tell you at those appts? Is dad in the same state as you? If he is then you may be able to go thru your court system, and no you still would not need to hire an attorney.

Beleive me I have done this. I have gone to the Child Support Offices. And they give me the same run around everytime. It has been 5 years and they have not done anything to my knowledge. I really would prefewr to not get a lawyer, I cannot afford one at this time. Thats why I am trying to seek child support. And another thing I just found out, his father has been filinf him on his income taxes. I had no knowledge of this. I don't file any taxes, i have not worked, I am a stay at home mom. What should I do about this?

You're a stay at home mom? That's a nice luxury when someone else, the state, is supporting your child.

Why are you so adament about the father supporting the child when you aren't doing it either?

I'm just confused.
For me, in OH, you go to your appt., give them your info., give them info. where dad is and where he works, then a confrence is set - court ordered. They send you and he notice of the date and time to show.
You come in and go through everything and they figure out the amount due and can set up garnishment.
Please, someone correct me if it is different in other states.
Request a confrence/hearing be set when you go for your appt.

She's been in school for a long time now or she just hasn't bothered to work in a long time if she hasn't had the need to file any income tax returns for 5 years.

Ok, editing since she didn't say it's been 5 years that she hasn't filed income tax. She's just been waiting 5 years for someone else to do what she needed to do.

Noone has requested a DNA test. They ask me the same thing everytime I go up there....like where he works, lives, phone numbers, ss#, what he drives, stuff like that, then they tell me they will be in touch. We live the same state, same town. Thank you, your information has been really helpful.

I think the OP has the Children and Families office confused with child support. Even though they are in the same building they are still 2 separate entities. You must make an appt with child support and bug them everyday if you have to. They will get so tired of hearing from you that they will have to get off their butts. Before an order for child support can be ordered the DNA must be complete.

I would also like to add that if she is attending school full time then she is not sitting on her butt. She is trying to get a better education so that 1 day she will not need the assistance of the state and tax payers. I however do feel that she should be at least working a part time job while attending school. It is the responsibility of BOTH parents to support this child.

I got to school in the day while my son is in school. I do work part time..but it is for my parents and they pay me cash, and give me a house to live in. Ido all I can do...it is hard to go to school get out of school pick my son up from school and then my fiance works a full time day job and a part time night job, so i have noone to keep him so i could work at night. Plus with all the homework we have....there is just not enought time for much else

Well since you work part time for CASH make sure you report that to welfare so that you are not committing welfare fraud.

I do. I have my mom fill out the paper work and sign it. It shows when I work and how much she pays me.
