I think I made a grievous error.

I have been contacting family, friends and professionals who have any recollection of the timeframe in which my soon-to-be-ex-husband had a "nervous breakdown". During that time, he was heavily drinking, using drugs and being abusive.
I just contacted a woman who he was supposed to be working for at the time. At the time, she was very understanding, concerned and aware of his "breakdown".
But I have to admit....it feels weird that I would ask her about her recollections.
Am I breaking any laws by asking his former employer if she remembers our family's struggle at the time?

Reasons for asking her

I should add that we are going to court this month. He is asking for joint custodies, child support (although our son has lived with me for almost 8 months now), alimony and for the court to order to me to pay his legal fees. He also is asking for a temporary order to put our son in his care.
I guess I'm getting nervous...wanting witnesses to what went on.
But is it illegal to ask his former employer of her personal recollections of his behavior?

She just gladly answered me

The lady just answered me gladly. Turns out she had a very good perspective of him at the time...as she put it, "he was a time bomb waiting to go off, agitated all the time" and an "emotional wreck".
Whew, I feel relieved now.
I felt so sneaky asking her and scared of what he would do if he found out.
Still scared of him, but at least I know she'll lend her persective if necessary.
