What is the name of your state? Kansas

I went in one day to my place of employment to buy a couple of items, but while checking out one of my friends tossed the idea in there of putting a couple of the items in the bag for free. The total cost of both the items was $60. We were caught, and fired. We were takin back to the LP office, signed some papers and what not and admitted to what we did. The police came, and we were given a ticket for court appearence. I now have a court date coming up soon and I need to know what to do.

It was a first time offense, I have no prior record. I was wondering if I should plead no contest, or just plead guilty to the charges of Shoplifting. Also, what kind of penalty should I expect? The police officer and the security guy said probably a fine of about $200-$500, and possibly community service. Would that be about accurate, or do you think it would be different?

thanks in advance.

My response:

You're lucky you didn't do this in Iran, or Iraq - - hell, for that matter, any of those "sandmonkey" countries. You'd be minus a hand or two. {{CHOP}}

The penalty will probably not be very serious, like you said, fines, community service, blah blah blah. I would be more concerned with your future employment opportunities.

You might want to contact your former employer and beg (yes, beg) if they would be willing to withdraw the police complaint if you agreed to pay restitution. You would have to convince them that you learned your lesson.

Calling your employer and begging could get you witness tampering charges. Many states have first-time offender shoplifting programs that allow you to avoid a conviction and a criminal record. Some money spent on a lawyer now could save you a lot of trouble down the line.
