Mandated reporters are human beings too.

They absolutely are human beings. Unfortunately, in both of the cases you are familiar with, the school really failed the child. The school (and the individual mandated reporter)-at least in the first issue- could have found themselves in a world of hurt if anyone had decided to pursue the issue.

That being said, not all mandated reporters will hesitate to make their obligated report. I am a mandated reporter and if I suspected a child in my care was being abused, even if it was a staff member's child, I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to make the report. My primary concern is for the safety and welfare of the child, and not the safety, or job security, of the adult.

I'm sorry the cases you knew of turned out like they did. The first case was especially sad.

In all fairness, I was in a similar situation. Except the principle was my ex's cousin while the kids where in elementary school. I too was told of the abuse every time my children visited or were allowed a conversation with me. I made calls to children's services that were ignored, because there was also a cousin at the local cps office as well.

When two of the older children made it to middle school they were afraid to tell anyone, because they just got into more trouble when they had talked in the past. I called the middle school counselor and she spoke to the kids, and then I contacted the state officials over the department. They in turn sent workers from another county in to check on the kids. It came out there were numerous reports made that were never followed up on. By neighbors, myself, church members and other teachers.

Abuse was founded, a few people lost their jobs. Dad took off to another state with the kids.. I filed a change in custody and the kids now live with me.

So to be fair, lets not assume that these children are not being abused. It does in fact happen. I am not saying that *is* the case here, but it could be.

In fact, when he took off to another state the step mother hit and choked my daughter and threatened to kill her. I called the police to check on them and step mom admitted it all happened. I called childrens services there too, and was told I had no rights to my children by the cps worker and that I would be brought up on criminal charges if *anyone* made another report.

I have little to no faith in cps, my oldest daughter was recently harassed so severely she went into pre term labor... One worker is on admin. leave pending investigation, another has been terminated and my daughter has filed suit against the office and the state. The report was not even filed on my daughter, it was on her stepchildrens mother.

I too have little faith in CPS. They are overworked, underpaid and as a result many of them simply cannot do their jobs, or end up burned out and shouldn't be IN the job. What happened to your daughter was totally appalling.

However, I have seen and read of many other horror stories involving CPS.

One mother I knew of years ago, was fighting hard because she was certain that her daughter was being sexually abused by the father. CPS investigated several times and came back "unfounded". CPS wouldn't even take the child's doctor seriously. Finally though DAD took the child into another doctor for treatment during his summer visit, and that doctor suspected sexual abuse and reported dad...and dad ended up going to jail for it.

However, the absolute worst part of the whole situation was CPS took the child away from MOM and put the child in foster care. It took mom 6 months to get the child back! Their excuse for doing it was mom's failure to protect the child. It took 6 months to get it in front of a judge who yelled at CPS because mom was trying to protect the child and wasn't getting anywhere.

Irony... It's subtle, but there.

Offensive is the word to describe several senior members behavior in the recent past. I will concede that attitudes and behaviors have improved IMMENSELY over the last few days.

If the trend towards common courtesy and reasonable discussion continues, I'll change my signature.

So unless we all play according to your rules, you'll continue to use a completely offensive and derogatory term?

Nice.

JediDad,
I'm fairly new here too and not trying to pick a fight, but your sig line IS offensive.

Plus, the logic of your argument boils down to "I'll be offensive until everyone else stops being offensive."

Is that the way you really want to come across?

Hypocrite.

Is it really so hard to be civil?

No its not hard for any of us to be civil. However none of us have signatures that are derogatory names for mentally handicapped individuals:mad:. Can you say the same about that? Didn't think so:rolleyes:

So you don't mind offending any number of posters (and no, I am not one of them(*)) with a mentally challenged child? "Retarded" is offensive to many, but especially those who have been dealt that hand. It says a lot about your character (or rather, lack of it) that you'd play this kind of game.

ETA (*) I should clarify... I am not the parent of a mentally challenged child. I am, however, offended.

I am one of them and I find it extremely offensive.

It is unfortunate, but I simply don't tolerate bullies. I really don't want to bring everything back up because, as I said, several senior members have been MUCH more civil lately. I couldn't just sit idly by and allow such vile behavior to continue.
If my being disliked results in other people being treated civilly, then so be it.
To stop a bully, you generally need to confront a bully.
I'll take the hit so others don't feel attacked and belittled when they come here.

JediDad,

Although you may think that you are holding some "control" over the Seniors' responses, I assure you that you are not.

The only thing you are accomplishing is offending others (myself included) on this board that have no part in your battle with the Seniors.

You were asked politely to take the offensive signature off, the way I view it you can do this one of two ways....either willingly or not. I'm sure admin will side with the Seniors' on this issue, its just offensive. If I were you, I would lean toward the "catching more flies with honey" thought process ;)

Sorry OP for the thread Hijack
