Yes, the odor of drugs coming from a motel is enough reason for them to knock on the door.

A police state because they knocked on the door of a room that may have smelled like drugs and came in because the occupant let them in? Now that is an insult to all those who actually have lived in a true police state

Stepson told me there was a knock on the door in the middle of the night.
He opened it. Three policemen stood outside and said they had to come in.

Being very sleppy and young, he just let them in.

To make it clear. In the same time he open the door and the police wnated to come in . They walked in. He never had a chance to say anything since he was just woken up.

I find it humorous that, whenever you don't like the answers, you change the story.

Sorry, but I have yet to ever stay in a hotel room where the person opening the door does not pretty much obstruct the whole door. he had to step back or to the side. He could have refused. He did not. Under CA law that is implied consent.

And no they didnt give their permission to be frisked or search through their things.
Did they make any effort to refuse or deny the search? Again, we fall back to implied consent.

I do think it is wrong.
You have a right to that opinion. Legally, it does not appear to be the case. And they can complain if they wish to do so.

And just because it is a smell in the motel that is no reason to start knocking on doors in the middle of the nite.
Actually, they can. And, strictly speaking, they can knock on doors even if they were just bored. It would be annoying and land them a lot of complaints, but they could do so.

So, if they want to complain, they can contact the agency and do so.
