Runnin are you worried about Iraq and a dangerous MOS? 70% of army positions are behind the lines or state side. Is it possible to go back and voice your concerns and get a SAFE job if Iraq is a concern?

You Idiot

You went AWOL after attending Basic Training? Did you do any research at all about what you were getting yourself into? Are you even aware that there is a war going on right now?

Sounds to me like you did absolutely no planning. Did you see the huge $$$ bonus for enlisting and throw your common sense out the door?

I was enlisted, after a while I didn't want to be anymore, so I finished out my contract and left the Army. (I served for 6 years and reached the rank of E-5).

STOP AND THINK about your family. Who is going to take of your kid if you are in prison for a year? You got yourself into this mess, and your kid is giong to be the one to pay for it. At least if you were in the military you would still be getting a paycheck (assuming your unit was smart enough to take you off of the payroll).

One day, your gonna get your License checked for something or another, and then you are going to prison for a maxium of 1.5 years. So what is your plan then? You gonna let social services take care of your kid? Have you thought through the consequences of your actions at all dead beat? Be a man and take care of this problem before it haunts you and your family for years to come.

Even if you turn yourself in after 30 days, if you willfully turn yourself in, it affects the Maximum prison sentence. It's 18 months max if caught, 12 months if you turn yourself in.

I went AWOL after being in the military for 2 years(coming home on leave, between Korea and Fort Hood). I was AWOL for 14 months, I then turned myself in at Fort Cambell. They sent me to Fort Sill to outprocess on an OTH. It isn't as bad as people think. I am now going to school for free on a government grant. Nobody cares if you were in the military, unless you want a government job.

People telling this guy that his kids will care when he gets older, or people will look down upon you, are misinformed. It's really kinda silly to talk down to somebody for just wanting to quit his job. Their are plenty of people that never go into the military. He is the same as them.

Keep your head up and do what you want with your own life. These people don't take care of you, so don't listen to the derogatory and disparaging comments. PEACE, and tell us what happens.

don't pat yourself on the back so hard you fall over. While you don't view AWOL as serious, in many situations it doesn't matter how YOU view it. The military is not just a job and going AWOL in not just quitting a job. You don't take an oath for most jobs and for the jobs you do take an oath (military, physician, attorney) there is a reason for it. Further, if you break the oath, there are penalties.

It has worked out well for you so far, but don't be deceived that others may look askance at one who broke a "solomn oath". As an employer, I HAVE to think of all the drill that a person goes through to join the military and all the opps a person has to change their mind prior to being sworn in...then at some point later on, something was not agreable and a person "quits'. Its not just hiring a quitter. To me it represents a person who is not considering how valuable it is to be a man of your word, to be faithful to a promise, especially when it is a promise to serve your country.

Its hard for me to envision a person who had gone AWOL talking about this in a setting that included educated, professional people and not have them mentally take a step back. This may sound harsh, but I know there is a lot of false bravado when people go AWOL and are discharged fairly quickly. Time is the ultimate test.

Ok this thread should be closed we are no longer providing advice, and just debating what is honorable and what is not. An OTH is not the end of the world it doesn't mean that a person should be looked down upon, and frankly any employer that is gonna look down upon me for some stupid *(&) I did a long time ago isn't worth working for The military is a job, and its not for everyone and god knows recruiters can be very decepting people when trying to "sign em up". Go back get it taken care of and move on with your life

Thank you for wasting our time on you. You have been told the consequences, so you will be prepared for what will happen.

PS.

When you read my last comment to you, REALIZE! You could never say to me that "I have no idea".

That being said,**************You are a coward. Your children will grow up. They will learn of your AWOL, they will suffer the consequences of it. That in it's self will be your legacy with your children.

(You need to spell before you can help your kids with their home work).

I am not one that usually brings up old threads but...

What a terrible thing to say to someone. It really blows my mind what people will say when they know no one else knows who they are.

That was a gutless post Shay Parie and you should be ashamed of yourself for posting it. You could use a lesson in tact. Would you have said that to someone in person? Me thinks NOT.

Why don't you stop wasting this forum's time?

cyberspook, you yourself stated that you did not like to
dredge up the past, so why did you? Also, judge
not lest to be judged; and take note of our First Amendment;
as well as Shay-Pari'e's Senior status; and I have noticed
that this is not the first negative observation you have
posted about Shay-Pari'e's post. Lastly, if you do not

I have taken notice of Shay-Parie's senior status. I am not impressed with someone who has nothing better to do with there time then write bashing posts about people.

Why did I dredge up the past? Because it was such an appaling post that I felt compelled to say something.

Mama said once, if you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all.

Also, I am aware of our First Amendment rights and have exercised mine as well.
