What is the name of your state? New Jersey

My son was arrested for breaking into an abandoned house. He drove there with his vehicle. They said they needed a search warrant, so they impounded the vehicle until they got one. Then they filed for forfeiture of the vehicle, because it was used to commit a crime. My question is I need to get the license plates and turn them in, in addition to his wallet and any other personal items. At what point legally can I do this. The police didn't know if after they had searched the car whether or not i could get these things or not. When can I??? Thanks!
