My dad is a notary, and I just asked him if he could go to a jail and notarize things for an inmate. He looked at me like I was bonkers - but he said he could..... so.....

You're wrong. I've handled real estate closings where we've needed to get docs to the jail to be signed. And yes, they were notarized.

hmmm ok. I don't know how to go about that being an ordinary person as well as being in a different state than he is. I always thought if you were visiting an inmate you could not give them anything, have them sign anything etc. I had a friend who was in jail and he had me pick up his pay check for him. I brought it to the jail to visit and they would not let me have him sign it to be deposited. Maybe a notary or something would be able to do that. I'll look into it thanks

Most county lockups/prisons have the ability to have a doc that is sent there notarized. People in prison DO have homes that need to be sold, and deeds that need to be signed. Buyers don't get punished and lose the homes they are buying just because the seller got locked up. Closings still go on. . .

i actually remember hiring a notary to meet up at a jail for an inmate once. i was "deputized" by the notary. went in.....and had someone sign something. i can't remember what it was though...but we did get a signature.
