In Dec.1992, my sister was diagnosed with a pinched nerve in her back by an orthopedic surgeon. She had been having severe back pain w/a small lump on her left hip. He took X-rays, etc.,told her that she had a pinched nerve, and she would likely have to learn to live w/the pain since surgery can make the problem worse. She asked about the lump. He told her that it should go away.

In May 1993, she was diagnosed w/terminal bone cancer, that the lump on her hip was a tumor that had been doubling is size every 2 weeks. Her pain was unbearable.

Her cancer doctor sent us to Mass General in Boston and to make a long story short, saved her life after she spent nearly the next year in the hospital. Thankfully, she is alive and cancer-free but lost her left crest illiac and most of her pelvic bone. She has over 1000 stitches and 14 hours of plastic surgery to try to reshape her torso to compensate for the loss of the bones.

She is permanently disabled and has been on Social Security for several years now at 30 years old. She cannot have kids, etc., lost a kidney to radiation damage, and is about to lose the leg she fought so hard to keep 7 years later.

At the time, she was unable to sue any doctor. Later, she was too depressed to deal with anything. It has been very hard on all of us and now this in 2000.

We live in Indiana. Is it too late to sue given the situation?

Dear generic girl;

This is a classic example of why people should never take the word of one doctor. Always get a second opinion!

Unfortunately, your sister has let the statute of limitations expire and now it is too late for her to file a claim.

My prayers are with you and your sister. I can imagine what she must be going through. God bless you and your family.

Pam
