I work in a petstore. I'm in charge of the small animal dept. and sometimes animals are sick. Sometimes I take them home to care for them.
Is this working off the clock?
I'm an hourly sales associate
It was partially voluntary because other employees didn't follow thru with medications and complained regarding doing so. My manager offered to compensate me with extra pay and product but that rarely happened.
My department is small animals. Pet hamsters rats Guinea pigs rabbits
Any time you actually spend time at home caring for the animals (feeding, medicating, etc...) them that precludes you from doing other things, you should be paid.

Suggestion ...keep solid written records of all this extra duty in some safe place **************
CA has some rather unusual rules as to computing overtime as well....and if this involves a lot of time when you were not free to do other things ....there may be OT issues as well.....
You might be smart to drop " partially voluntary " from your future comments ...invites unnecessary debates ...I read your post about in context of management needed somebody to care for animals overnight and you volunteered for the extra work?
