Dress Code for public school

Its been awhile it seems that this was an issue... but I have one..and am hoping to get some advice...

My daughter is in the 6th grade...and is forced to tuck her shirt in! This is uncomfortable, and because she is just devloping, and her age..she sometimes feels a little self concious ( excuse spelling) .

Many of the girls have begged not to be made to do this, they dont like it. I was told that this is "sight based managment decision" and that I needed to go to a meeting and make my case...which I did...to closed ears. It was in their opinion, that this makes better kids...to teach disipline..and that they felt they did better. I pointed out that this was not proven, and I wanted to know why their personal opinin superceded parents and kids civil rights? They said because it just did. The SBMT consists of about 10-12 people...some parents, teachers. and a local business rep.....so these 10-12 people are permitted to tell our kids how to wear there clothes?? By the way...the school officials dont follow this code...but yet...these kids dont have the same right....is it me? Or is there something wrong with this picture?...does anyone know what the laws are with regards to kids civil rights in public school ? Or where I can get this info? I know there have to be some rules...but its they need to pick the ones that are important, not waste them on something as trivial as tucking in your clothes. I would welcome any advice. or legal knowledge...

Is everyone here BLIND?

Excuse me, but did some GUY in here say that this dress code should be followed because this little girl would be raped if she showed a little too much skin?

MY GOD...noone picked him up on that and someone else actually restated it!
"someone is trying to instill some moral character in your daughter" ------Yes, it is the father!
"Forget about the law, for just a moment - - and start thinking about the stage of life your daughter is in, and with boys around that have their own hormones raging." -------Oh BOY
"You're looking at a future rape victim. And, she'll have you to thank." -------How sexist is this? Have you ever bared your chest in public? Did you get raped? It is not the victim's fault if the boys and men are not brought up to see that a crime is an immoral act.

Please tell me what RAPE has to do with how a girl dresses?!!??!!
This is such an old way of thinking I can't believe this dinosaur of a man still exsists!!! OK for one minute I will indulge you and ask....if a girl wears a bikini at the beach, is it ok for someone to rape her? Then when is it ok to rape a woman? When she is 12 years old and has 1/2 inch of leg showing? If this girl gets raped, it has nothing to do with how short her skirt is...or even if she was walking around totally naked!! MEN need to stop blaming their actions on bodily functions (hormones, etc...) and begin to take responsibility for their behavior!!! Be logical!

IAAL, you are WAAAY off base here. It is guys like you that make it so difficult for women to be themselves. It also makes fathers not have a clue as to what little girls need to make them stand up for themselves. This is why women are so timid. Damn, it makes me angry!

"The dress code is there to maintain a better learning environment ".....This is the actual basis for the rule. To dress seductively or outrageously is to invite distraction. It gives the wrong message about who you are and how you want to be portrayed to the public. We all should dress appropriately for the situation. NOT because we are afraid of a crime being committed against us, but because we need to have an environment conducive to learning or whatever the situation warrants!!

dress code

I agree with you to a degree....but my situation is a little different, because I am not referring to to short of skirt. I am talking about tucking in your shirt. Please reread, and I would appreciate any opinion. I am at my wits end on this subject, but am determined to get it changed, because so many of the kids now are wearing 'hoodies" only becasue its the only thing that they dont have to tuck in. The point here is that..where are these kids rights to have the same option as the rest of do, and wear our shirts in or out. What difference does it make other than to have these kids feel uncomfortable for the 1st 8 hours of the day? My daughter ( and others) dread even going to school..not becasue she doesnt like school...but becasue she dreads being uncomfortable all day. Not only do they have to tuck in their shirts, but they also have to be very fitted...adding to the discomfort...this is a public school...I pay taxes for education...not for fashion policing...its ridiculas....I agree some things can cause distraction....but tucking in or out...is not one of them....aby advice anyone??

Thanks

In defense

There is always a reason for a dress code, zero tolerance, etc. Missouri lost 34% of it's teachers last year NOT because of low pay and NOT because of overload of work (grading, lessons, discipline reports...etc) but we're tired of lack of support from administration AND many parents and we don't need that. I always told my students "if they wouldn't do this in church or wear whatever to church...don't do it/wear it to school. There are MANY children in a classroom (not just one) and rules are meant to protect them. If one parent complains that a dress code is bad, there's another one in the wings who would complain that there SHOULD be restrictions. Junior high and high school classes are often overcrowded, many youth are preoccupied with sex and violence (it's WAAAYYY different in school then we were kids) I left teaching and I do miss the students, but I'd had it! And believe me, 7-12 grade level students KNOW they can get by with more because mom and dad won't back the local schools. I think ALL parents should be required to spend one full week in the class of 30+ 7th graders alone and get something done while putting up with skirts that hike to the rear when sitting, boys making loud disruptive noices, confiscating guns/knives/drugs/chains, etc. and 1/2 the class wanting to go to the bathroom (when one wants to go, the others do too...thus the 3 passes only). Try supporting the rules (that ARE in the best interest of large group activity like school and support your district!!!!!! Sometimes I think parents should be ashamed of themselves for petty things and stop talking students rights...the others have rights to a non-disruptive classroom too.

kids have no rights

kids have no rights in nc schools, i know i live in nc. the teachers and administrators have a 'i am god' complex. they are judge, jury and executioner. heaven help any parent that question their judgement and actions. been there, done that. my son had been suspended for blowing his nose in math class, i questioned it and he has since been threatened, harrassed and additionally punished by school administration. i am sorry ncdad, but not only does your daughter have no rights, you as her parent have even less. beware, your daughter will now be labeled as a 'problem child' and continually watched. nc schools care more that the students are blindly obediant little robots than that they are good students. I sincerely empathize with you.

To all unhappy NC parents

If you are so unhappywith the school system, take your kids out and homeschool them. My kids are in school to learn, not just about schoolwork but about life and some of the life lessons include obeying all rules no matter how trival and not disrupting class no matter how important.

I hate the fact that my kids are subject to girls showing off throngs and bras, even with the dress codes and not being able to hear the teacher teach because of the disruption of a few. Is it any wonder that our state is one of the stupidest in the nation??? Its because our teachers spend too much time policing where parents don't and not enough time doing their jobs.

i'm sorry, i didn't know all nc teachers went thru the police academy when they recieved their teaching degrees. i must have missed that law passed in nc that you cant blow your nose in math class! if you people for one moment think that students didnt exhibit these behaviors when you went to school then you weren't attending ANY school in America. i only want teachers to TEACH not POLICE. i guess it's more important to harrass the GOOD students for nose blowing and wearing their skorts 1/2" too short. if your kids are so seriously distracted that they cant learn because of another's attire or a sneeze, maybe you need to get them checked for ADD. homeschooling/private schooling has become very popular in nc, and yes i plan to take my son OUT of public school. tammy8, dont take your kids to the beach--they actually wear bikinis there! good luck you have a 2 in 5 chance of your child succeeding in nc public schools. but i guess the 'life lessons' are worth the price of a bad education.

I dont blame him

I think the whole thing is ridiculous, and I dont blame this dad for being mad. Why is it perfectly alright for the cheerleaders to wear the micro-mini skirts with visible panties to school? Because they belong to part of the athletic group, and schools seems to let the athletics get away with whatever they want. It's not right, and most people know it.

Also, cheerleaders with short skirts are going to be more disruptive than a girl whose skort is a half inch too short. But this childs rights are not important as the cheerleaders? There is far too much discrimination in schools today. Usually what it boils down too is what parents are making donations, and which ones aren't, and which parents have money and which ones don't.

My response:

You said - -

"Why is it perfectly alright for the cheerleaders to wear the micro-mini skirts with visible panties to school?"

It's because these are the best looking girls in the school, and very easy on the eyes. Who wants to look at an ugly Cheerleader? Being beautiful does have it's perks. Ugly girls should always wear dowdy, unattractive, clothes. That's the way it should always be.

Then, you said - -

"Usually what it boils down too is what parents are making donations, and which ones aren't, and which parents have money and which ones don't."

Now you've got it! Money talks, and bullcrap walks. Again, that's the way of life, and part of human nature.

If parents only received a college education, and made money commensurate with their education, they'd have enough money to never have to worry about these little details in life. But, no. High school graduates, or worse, dropouts, expect the same perks in life that "better" people get. Well, it doesn't work that way.
