What is the name of your state? IL

We recently encountered
the following problem: our rent is paid via a "drop
box" between the 1st and 5th of every month. For
September the management claims to have not receievd
said payment and to date that check has not cleared
our bank. The management made no attempt to contact us
via phone or in person to tell us of this problem, but
instead chose to slip a rather aggressive sounding
letter under our door, even though we were inside the
premises at the time. We are now being threatened with
outrageous late fees and even the termination of our
lease, all because management has lost the original
payment which was made. We are long time residents of
this complex (6 years) and have never experienced
anything like this before. What advice can you offer?

Go to the office and show them your copy of the check that you made out (assuming you have carbons). If you don't have carbons, at least show them the check register showing that the check was made out within the allowed time. Then, give them a new check and put a stop pay on the old one.

State: oh

I have almost the same problem, My landlord called me 9 days after my rent was due and asked if I paid it. I paid him on the 31st, rent was due on the first. He told me to wait another week to see if the check cleared. It didn't. I told him it was going to cost me $30 to stop payment on that check. He said not to do that , but he still wanted me to write him another check. I wasn't comfortable with that, so I stopped payment on the check and asked him (left message two seperate times on his answering machine) to split the cost with me of the stop payment. He never returned my call. So, I reissed him a check, minus the $15. He is now upset about that since he said not to stop payment, because he thinks he threw it away and it will never "reappear". Who is responible to pay the $30 stop payment fee?? The landlord or myself?

Please don't 'hijack' someone elses thread (especially one that is over a year old).
Start your own thread with YOUR specific circumstances and someone will try to help.
