What is the name of your state? Pennsylvania.

My landlord I had to buy renter's insurance with 50,000 liability 2 days before signing the lease which was ok with me but now on the renewal this person wants me to add her name to the renters insurance policy as an additonal insured. Can she do this and is it legal? I have a feeling that she is having me cover her liability insurance for her property.

It was my understanding that the renter's insurance was suppose to cover me and the option to get it was my decison alone. Are they allowed to force us to get it under the implication of eviction otherwise.

Thanks for your advice.

It is perfectly legal and acceptable for a LL to request to be named as an additional insured on the insurance policy. Many LL's now require it.

If it is a requirement for lease renewal and you do not comply ... she can evict.

Be thankful

the reason the landlord is requiring this if you or a pet should do some damage to your rental then the ins would cover the damages and all you would have to come up with is the deductable instead of the whole amount. so quit your griping this is a good thing for you. it also protects you. you miss grasshopper are too suspicious

Grasshopper say: Like the jackal who mocks his prey, you use fear to intimidate. The weakness of the jackal is his arrogance, and arrogance is the downfall of anyone who subverts the truth.
KUNG FU .. The movie... I can't remember which one and too tired to Google...sorry :o

It is not skin off my backside

I am not using fear to intimidate I am telling it like it is. it is no skin off my backside if she wants to be stupid. but if she doesn't do what the landlord wants then she will be back here crying about it just like these morons who don't pay their rent and then whine about being evicted. In my opinion having the insurance is peace of mind should something happen I am covered and do not have to come up with allot of money but maybe she is rich and can afford to lose a lot of money. Actually I hate Kung Foo. I remember years ago my friends and I used to call each other grasshopper

Thanks

Thanks for your help. I just am not familar with the renter laws, and I sometimes think the landlady is trying to take advantage of this. A couple of months ago she had someone plow the drive up the building and they damaged the stairs going up to the apartment. She told us that we had to make a claim our renters insurance for the damage to be repaired. I later found out that she was responsible for the cost of the repair. I just needed to know what I am responsible for. So, yes I guess I am a little suspicious.
Again thanks for the insight.

I understand

The renters insurance will cover any damages that you do or a pet. It will also cover you if a fire happens because if a fire happens the landlords insurance does not cover your belongings. Allot of tenants find that out too late. now on what she did she was responsible not you. I can understand why you are suspicious. I don't trust most landlords because allot of them are snakes
