Landlord wants cash

My land lord is demanding cash payments, giving me paper reciepts. He states that because of his divorce he does not and will not get a checking account. I have been giving him money orders from my bank. He has to go to my bank to cash it and they usually give him a hard time as he is not a member of the credit union. He states that due to his late work hours he can not make the bank before it closes. I'm trying to work with him but I want to make sure I am legally covered. Is a paper reciept legally binding as proof of paymet? I am trying to save up to buy a house and bank prefer a paper trail of checks, or money orders. I want to help him, but not at my expense. Can any one give me some good legal advice on how to preceed.

There is more going on here than his inability to get the checks cashed.
Tell him no thanks and continue giving him money orders or cashier's checks. If he doesn't like that then he can TRY to evict you. But he won't stand a chance.

You don't need to be involved with him trying to hide income for whatever reason.

Yes, a paper receipt is enough proof that you paid rent. You need to have it signed, dated, for what month it is for(Nov. rent), and the amount you paid(700.00)... Make sure he signs it! Make him write the receipt BEFORE you give him the cash, and DO NOT let him tell you he doesn't have time to wriye one and to come by later for one.
You should always get a receipt for paying rent, even if you use an MO, or a bank check... A MO stub or a Bank Check stub is not proof that you paid rent, it is proof that you purchased an MO or Bank Check...

I always got a signed paper reciept in addition to the check or money order. It's just that when he cashes it, it is registered as a transaction at a bank and traceable. Thank you both for your replies.

Your lease may have a clause explaining whether, and when, your landlord can demand something other than a personal check.

**A: what's the problem. Pay cash and get a cash receipt of payment. Simple.
