Launching a product that already exists?

Hello Everyone!

I am new to business and in the process of learning. In advance, please excuse my post if it sounds ignorant.

So I want to start a business. I have found a great product that is already in production and being sold. How would I find out who is manufacturing their product. How do I find out what kind of licensing or patents may be associated with it?
The product is along the lines of an herbal supplement. I was thinking about making some slight changes, putting a new label on the bottle and coming in as a competitor.

Can a few of you shed some light on the subject.
