What is the name of your state? California

LL lost money order. Who is responsible to pay for the money order fee, her or me?

I don't know about your states laws. But I had a similar situation with one of my LL and he (the LL) had to pay for the fee. After all it was his mistake not yours.

Did you get a receipt? If not, he can say that he never received it if you mailed it or slid it under the door.

If you have a receipt with the date, amount, and his(management) signature on it, they are SOL and you got a free months rent. Assuming you paid by check anyway... And you are not obligated to give them another check if they ask for it...

Huh???? The landlord said she lost the money order so she must have received it. If our poster has a receipt, that means rent was paid. What's free rent?

Assuming they paid by check????? Helllooooo, a MONEY ORDER was the method of payment.

Geez.

Goodies, this is the landlord's fault, she should be the one fixing it.

You are right... if the Landlord said he lost the rent payment, and he's sticking to his story, you're okay. BUT... Mailing a check or a money order via Mail, or thru the drop slot does not GUARANTEE that the rent will be paid.

A receipt from the Landlord stating they RECEIVED the Money Order is a guarranteed method of paying rent, because your Landlord ACKNOWLEDGED he/she received the payment.

Tell you what, for your next months rent, mail your landlord a money order/personnal check or drop it in the night slot. Then IF it doesn't arrive or gets LOST by a moron in management(yes they do exist), just tell them that you paid via M.O./personnal check and that it's not your fault. When they ask for your receipt PROVING that you paid rent and the fault is theirs, and you DON'T have one. What do you think is going to happen? Think they are going to take your word that you mailed it in?

Point is to get a receipt.

no... a MO is not a receipt from the apartment that you paid rent... It's a receipt from the Finance Co. that you bought the MO from...

When you got to 7-11 (with your $300.00 in cash for your rent)you buy a MO from a Finance Co. They in turn give you the MO with the amount on it, and you fill it out to Joe's Apartment. The stub that comes with the MO is not a receipt for the apartment, it's a receipt from the Finance Co. that supplied you the MO... If you should lose that MO, the stub acts as your proof that you gave the Finance Co. $300.00, not that you gave Joe's Apartment $300.00...
