Seemings everyone is having a heyday with this post, I thought I'd put my two cents in too. I just so happen to have a very ugly neighbour that in the past has poisioned intentionally our last dog an smiled at us while he watched our dog die a very painful death. He's also set up a dog trap on his edge of his property an put a calf bone hanging inside of it to lure a dog in the trap. Which he has in the past as another one of our neighbours with dogs, was found in his trap an the good guy rescued his expensive breed of dog from it. I am definitely NOT telling you to poison any animal, thats just cruel an heartless. But the dog trap might be the way to go. Once you catch that big dog, call the SPCA an have them take it to their shelter. That way the neighbour will have to pay to get his dog out of the pound. And where we live, the more the SPCA patrol have to take the dog to their pound, the fines get steeper an steeper. After him having to spend lots of money for his dog, it might make him realize the senseable thing to do is build a tall an secure fence to keep his big dog on his own property. Now I'll jump off the soapbox.

I would be careful what kind of a trap I used. The SPCA would not take kindly to one that would hurt the dog.

Just to get back to ya there Veronica about that dog trap. The dogtrap this guy built is not in anyway a leg hold or or illegal one. Its basically a big wooden box with a trap door on the front of it. When the dog goes for the bone say, it triggers some kind of string or rope, I'm not exactly sure what he used, the trap lid falls down an there is the dog in the trap. I think he used some fine wire mesh as the front door in a wooden frame. I had called up the SPCA cause I was concerned that it was illegal an for him to take it apart but they told us, that there was nothing they could do to make him stop using it as they couldn't see anything illegal about it. The ugly neighbours claimed that they were concerned for their livestock getting attacked by dogs or wild animals. Hope that clears it up for you a bit. Oh an I'd phone up the SPCA in your town an ask them about it before you build any kinda trap.

I was just using the SPCA as a guide or general example, not as the exact thing that this poster might have to look into in order to find out the exact laws an enforcements. But they would know a lot more than probably me or you, an can guide the poster in the proper directions he needs to take is all. Kay, jumping off the soapbox again, lol.

WOW. Looks like I stirred up a debate. Panzer, thanks for the advice and legal quotes. I am not sure the dog would be considered viscious at this point, but I would like to take the advice of shooting the neighbor. Don't really want to kill the dog, but I will if it is attacking mine. As for catching the dog, I don't think I could get close enough to it to get my hands on it. I tried the last time it charged my dog, I got between them and the big dog turned away and went back home. I guess the best thing to do is call animal control every time the dog comes in the yard and keep a watch over my dog, if he gets attacked I shoot. Not sure about the legalities of shooting, we live in a neighborhood but it is in a very rural county. I shot a snake once and nobody said anything.
