To anyone out there who can help.
I went thru a bitter divorce 7 years ago after 41 years of marriage. The divorce decree states she gets maintenance until she remarries or dies. Since neither I nor any member of our family or hers maintains contact with her, how do I find out if she remarries? If she does get remarried, you can bet she won't tell anyone because she is very greedy and wants those maintenance payments to continue. She had to buy out my half of the house so I know where she lives, but I need some legal way of forcing her, and I emphasize forcing, to tell me if she remarries. I talked to a local lawyer and she said she has no idea!! Surprise!! I retired from Federal Civil Service and they send her the maintenance direct. Hope someone out there had this problem and can help me.
Thanks

My response:

Don't disparage my profession by making idiotic statements like that. And, why should that "surpise" you, anyway ? Do you think there's some sort of "magic wand" that no one informed you about in order to filter this type of information to you ?

Surpise ! ! If you didn't put "protections" in your own Settlement Agreement for yourself, you deserve what you get, and are now personally dependant upon her "honesty" with you. You should have written in some "safety nets" or "checks and balances" for yourself, but you didn't. So now, you'll have no way of knowing if she gets married in Grants Pass, Oregon, or Los Angeles, California, or anywhere else for that matter.

You caused your own problems with your own FAILURES. So, don't take it out on my profession by being ignorant and making stupid statements. We are not "magicians" - - we are attorneys. We are not mind readers, and we are not clairvoyant. There is no magic to practicing law - - just clients who fail to use their brains and forget to look into the future to write in protections for "what if" scenarios.

Blame yourself, not lawyers. You made your bed, now sleep in it. Surprise, surprise.

Maintenance

I had two replies from lawyers ( I guess). Neither addressed the problem but just disparaged me. Now I know why there are so many lawyer jokes. Thanks for nothing.

After a stupid comment like that, did you honestly believe that I, or anyone, would be crawling to you, and begging to help you ?

I've got your answer, but I'll be damned if I help you. You kick my profession in the teeth with that stupid comment, and then you ask for help from a legal site ? Someone's just a bit twisted, don't you think ? And, it ain't me, buddy.

Go pay for your answers.

Now you're going to need an attorney, aren't you.

No need to get excited here I believe. Marriage is a MATTER OF PUBLIC RECORD. Sure, many juristictions, but, there are also many schools, state agencies, other government agencies, businesses, etc., and many of them have PUBLIC RECORDS, and, if they don't there might be ways to find out (nothing illegal proposed here, just that these agencies sometimes reveal this information often by mistake, etc.).

SO, you think she is remarried, just hire a PI or do some checking on the web yourself as a preliminary. My ex knows if she pulls this one and lies she pays big time. If you find out she is remarried, then you have your lawyer request payment back to you of EVERYTHING she was ever paid in alimony (since she attempted fraud), and your legal fees as well. Seriously, though, if she is remarried and lying - you can really go after her.

Good luck.
