1.) Contract says nothing. Policies are written and updated by department heads.

2.) I can set my own policies.

3.) Yes.

4.) No personal days, no paid sick time, limited vacation. Only part time employees.

John, quit being a jerk. What difference does it make if he answers the questions in your format or not, as long as he does answer them?

The entire 2nd paragraph of his reply was an edit. I asked for the formatted reply prior to his edit.

His original response gave the single reply, "No," to two questions that were polar opposites.

If the contract is silent on this matter and there is no language regarding "past practices" or "Maintenance of Standards," then there are no contractual reasons against setting your own standards.

That makes this a non-"Union Issues" question.

Just for the record, I am a SHE. I think it is an union issue, if you have a union contract that dictates progressive disciplinary actions associated with the policies. And, what makes the difference anyway, if that was the a related topic?

Sorry, mllandrum. I had a 50-50 chance of being right. I guessed wrong. No offense meant.

No problem, just joking anyway. Thanks for your response.

Beth has indicated that there are no legal impediments to setting your own absence policies. There are no contractual provisions against setting your own absence policies. Company policy seems to allow it. So, set them.

When you publish the policy just indicate that violations will subject to discipline. Then follow the contract as to what that discipline is.

PS: Just out of curiosity, what union are we talking about?

"if you are absent without a doctors slip for 6 times a year, it is a first warning, 7 is a second warning, and 8 is 3 days suspension, and 9 is termination. "

I'm sorry, but if this is what your contract says, then this is what you are stuck with. You can not take action against anyone who is using sick leave within the guidelines that the contract allowes. (period)

when the contract comes up for mid term barganing (if applicable), or renewal, then renegotiate this issue.
