Married to US Citizen...First Step???

I am in the US as a visitor and I married my fiancee on September 5th. I understand I need to apply for an Adjustment of Status but I am confused about Visa Numbers. Does my husband have to apply for a Visa number for me before I apply for my Adjustment of Status??? Once I get to the part about Visa Numbers on the INS site, I seem to lose track of what I'm supposed to do......any help would be appreciated, want to get this done ASAP so I can work....thank you
