Okay, I got curious and I did some digging. It would appear that in SC, a midwife may perform an episiotomy, but only as a emergency measure in a life-threatening situation.

THANK YOU!!
Can you post a link to that information?

Thank you for the clarification. However, the point still holds. And yes, as a matter of fact, stitches are counted; not necessarily by the person who put them in, but they are counted. They need to be able to tell for sure if they've all be taken out (self-absorbing material not withstanding).,

Grew up in a medical household.

THANK YOU!!
We were told they were self-absorbing.

BTW.... The grandmother and I ran into the midwife at the local Food Lion ( this was before the appointment last Monday).... and I asked her why she did not do the episiotomy if it was a legal issue... She said no she did not think it was necessary. I also ask the doctor the same question and she said no it was not a legal issue....

Lie like a rug....... karma is a b****

Since her license allows her to perform episiotomies only in limited circumstances, it's her responsibility to make sure she doesn't perform them when they are not absolutely warranted. Tears happen with episiotomies, too. She's the one who'll lose her license if she performs it unnecessarily. So where's the lie?

Bad outcome is not necessarily malpractice.

got ya....

Honestly.... I told the grandmother just forget about it! Focus only on what she has to do and helping her daughter heal and taking care of that baby!

She is computer illiterate.... Granddad and mother have been following this thread.

Like I told my friend their lawyer will be bigger than your lawyer!!

At the end of the day.... Do what you got to do to get through the day!

That being said... And with a medical background growing up.... And legal knowledge.... attorney?

Do you have any questions we should ask or not ask?

Regardless there will be a second opinion.

You had no right to even ask that. This is not about YOUR healthcare or the grandmother's health care. Good grief. You are so far abreast of what you are entitled to know and do, it is not even funny.

You should butt out because the new mother is an adult. And you have no right to ask any legal questions. You are a legal stranger. Plain and simple. You have NO RIGHTS here.

I am not myself a medical professional, nor am I a lawyer. I am someone who, in both my personal and work lives, have had a great deal of exposure to both.

The relevant question to the doctor is, Can you say with certainty that a episiotomy would have prevented this?
