Admins: I'm completely uncertain where to place this topic. I apologize if this location is wrong.

My daughter, aged 16, makes her small income playing live music. So far, coffee shops and eating establishments have been the only places she has been performing. As you may understand, this severely limits her choice of venues to market to, and send her promo packs. With nicer weather around the corner, many nicer drinking establishment book more entertainment. She would like to try to market.to these venues if possible.

However, minors and liquor compliance laws are usually cut and dried. In our local and state liquor statutes, I can't find any language barring her from working as a music performer at any bar/club. I find a few.sentences regarding minor employees, but not this situation. Of course, an establishment may have their own.policies, but may shy away from hiring my daughter due to vague laws.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Bar? No.

An afternoon beer garden at a local festival? I would allow.

At the local upscale winery? Yes.

In this business, like any other, you go where the clients have the money to book you at a later date.

Haha, no. I wouldn't let my daughter gig at Willies Roadside Tavern and Honky Tonk.

Unfortunately, all three establishments are governed by the same rules.

Thank you, sir. I did just that.

From the legal department of the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission, that there is no STATE restrictions in place for this situation. Meaning, local and city ordinances must be checked and followed.

I knew the latter part about local ordinances. However, in our county, there is not an ordinance concerning minors within these establishments. There are city ordinances, like mine, that states absolutely no minors allowed after 9pm.

Thank you, and I promise to keep her away from the dive bars, Blue Meanie.

Here is a link to Nebraska's Official Website, with information on the employment of minors:

https://dol.nebraska.gov/LaborStandards/EmploymentOfMinors

And here is a link to federal child labor and wage laws: http://www.dol.gov/whd/childlabor.htm

The Department of Labor can issue special employment permits for minors after an inspection of the working conditions of a business.

Good. We wouldn't want your daughter to grow up as someone disreputable--like a Speaker of the House.

*SIGH*

That's clearly not what I said.

Out where I live, they are dive bars. If she had the opportunity to play Billy Bob's Texas in Fort Worth, that would be a different story.

Besides, she plays little, to no, country music. So, thanks for the name calling. Good day, Ma'am.

Thank you for that.

But my daughter is self employed. She has/will file her 1099s appropriately during tax season. Carries insurance on her equipment, and a limited liability policy.

You're correct.

I would discourage her from being an ineffective leader turned tobacco lobbyist.

Contractors do not file 1099's. 1099's are filed by those who pay them (when it exceeds $600 for the year). Of course, that doesn't mean she's not responsible for paying tax (and not just "tax season", the self-employed are supposed to make estimated payments quarterly).
