File for unemployment or welfare. Please don't take your job loss out on the father and ask him to support you unless he's been a jerk to you. But if he's been good up until now, you don't want to risk that by pissing him off asking him to support you. Unemployment or welfare would be a much nicer way to go.

Good luck with your job hunt and don't presume you will stay unemployed. I was laid off from my job of 13 years last month. I xame home and made phone calls for interviews. By end of dayI was laid off, a competitor of my old place called me for an interview and within 24 hours I had a new job - and for more money. You were just laid off. How do you know you won't be able to find work?

I was under the impression that child support was based on the ncp's income, not the cp. Is that not the answer here? I know of many people who are on welfare, never worked a day in their life, and they are lucky to receive a dime of child support.

No that is not the answer. There are a few states that base CS on just the NCP's income but in many states it is based on the CP's and the NCP's income and VA is one of those states that does base it on both parent's income.

If you were to file for a modification in child support, by the time it got to court, you will probably have found another job anyway.

Not to mention that the court has the discretion to impute income to you based on what you were making when you were working. Child support is not to support you, it's to help you support the child, and you have the financial obligation to support the child too.
