What is the name of your state? NY

My mother has been contacted by a collection agency about an old credit card bill from about 10 years ago. She has no memory of ever owing this amount or having a credit card with this company. The amount is quite large. She also has cancer and has mounting medical bills, and if it turns out she really does owe this money, I don't see how she could pay it (she's retired). How would we find out if she really does owe this money, and when her last payment was made (if any)? Should she tell the collection agency about her illness or will they just use it against her?

If it is 10 years old, it is well past the Statute of Lilitations in New York state. www.creditinfocenter.com has a link. A credit card is an open account.
I would send a letter saying you don't recognize this and it is timebarred in any event and never contact me about this again. Send the letter CRRR.
