What is the name of your state? Iowa
My mother in law's husband has CC and other debts many cards in fact and transfers them around to other CC..and then accepts "checks" for many thousands of dollars from these creditors and deposists them to consolidate this debt.. etc etc...etc. OK>.. i must warn this is all her perspective and I am unsure of the exact accuracy of the information but from what I can tell it sounds plausible. my father-in-law had an impossible time understanding how E-bay bidding worked... so I am unsure he really knows what he is doing with all these cards.>>
Anyway he has many thousands of dollars of debt to these cards and makes minimum payments.. my MIL thinks that she may have cards that he took out in her name. I suggested that she get herself a free credit report to verfi this. She tends to just complain and not act on this. She keeps telling and asking him not to do all this "skeaming" but he ignores that.. he says if he dies (which is totally possible that he will go before her) first that she can use the 40,000 life insurance and her inheritance from her mothers death to pay that debt off... umm excuse me something a little wrong here..?? If not leagally ...morally. She has thought about getting a leagal seperation at one time and forcing him to sell off the assets and devide them so as to force him to pay the debts off. I really dont think that 70+ year olds need to be stressing themselves out like that. Since the FIL seems to be out of control on this and she is really unwilling to take any leagal recourse as drastic as a seperation then what can be done? It is not fair to burden your spouse with debt that he/she kept pleading with you not to make. I am a collection agent and I don't try to hard to go after people like that--for that reason--i go after people on dis that think they deserve a new comp and think the rest of us should foot the bill in higher prices.
What could she do in-other-words.
