The thing about women not working during parts of the marriage is partly because many men want their wife at home with their kids while they are really young. So, should the women be punished financially for that?
I, personally, am not a woman who would be happy being at home all day every day for years, I like having somewhere to go, earning money and being more than just someone's wife(and mother), but many women prefer to stay at home, and if their husband is encouraging them to do so, then don't bitch about it later if/when the marriage dissolves.
Every where I turn I hear of women who stops working because they got married!!! That is something you don't hear everyday in Europe, so be grateful that so many families here can live on just one income, appreciate what you have instead of whining about what you don't.
