What is the name of your state?
NY

My boss has spending issues. He lives very well - travels, goes to sporting events, concerts, opera, out to dinner every night, etc. etc...

He used to have 5 people working for/with him and now it's just him and me -- in no small part because of these issues.

Recently I was going to quit because he wouldn't give me a decent raise and expected more responsibility - and because I was worried about money (although I had always been paid). I was offered another job and planned to take it. I talked to my boss about it and we reached an agreement about my job & money and so I stayed on.

Since then my paycheck bounced once (he covered it) and today (payday) I cannot deposit my paycheck because there's no money in his account - not even in the credit line. I said to him "so I can't deposit my check today?" and he said "yeah - let's hold off on that" as if it's a non-issue.

I am a mother of a young child and my husband stays home. I cannot NOT be paid on time. What can I do? Can I not come to work until I am paid?

Your boss is a jerk. Seems like he has financial issues - and you should not have to deal with it.

You need to start looking for another job that will ensure you get a paycheck every week that you can cash on time!

My fiance' worked for a company, and his boss bounced several checks. My fiance' would cash the check at the bank, and then a few days later (after paying all the bills) the bank would call wanting the money back, because there were no funds from his boss.

The bank is now to the point where they will NOT cash ANY checks that my fiance's brings to them. And it's not even his fault. It's his ex-boss's fault! The other day, my fiance' brought in a check to the bank for $15.00 and they would not cash it. They told him that he had to wait until it cleared.

You need to get away from the guy you are working for. What happens when all of a sudden, he cannot even GIVE you a check?

See #30 on the form here:

Looks like you may have to deposit the check and wait for it to come back dishonored before the state will address this for you. Of course, now your bank has probably charged you for depositing was turns out to be an NSF check. I'd want to be reimbursed for that too, but to the best of my knowledge, there is no legal requirement for him to do so.

If you'd like to call the NYS Dept of Labor first, here's their numbers; call whichever one is closest to you:

Good Luck.

You need to start looking for a new job pronto. I expect you know you should have taken the other opportunity and not let the boss talk you into staying but that's water over the bridge now.
