I was divorced in Florida 10 years ago. I pay child support and alimony. In a few weeks my youngest child reaches 18 and I will no longer have to pay child support. The alimony is perpetual and periodic and until the ex remarries or one of us dies, I must pay. I have since moved to Indiana and am contemplating not paying the alimony. What can the state of Florida do to enforce this action? If it means no longer being able to go to Florida, I can live with that. What will the state of Indiana allow as far as collection laws, and in what state do I seek legal advise - Florida or Indiana?

My response:

She'll have the judgment recognized by Indiana, and then Indiana will throw you in jail for contempt of court. No matter where you go, the same thing will happen with the judgment. It will follow you.

Never, never, never (did I say "Never" ?) disobey a court order. Can you say "Contempt of Court" ? Can you say "Jail" ? Can you say "Monetary Sanctions" ?

Judges really hate it when someone decides to say, in effect, "Screw you Judge".

I would suggest that you talk to a Florida lawyer, if you haven't already done so, about finding a way to place a "cap" on the number of years you must pay Alimony.

Good luck to you.
