I closed on a property about a month ago. Two days ago, the closing agents called and stated that due to a mistake on their end, $1200.00USD in transfer fees were not paid and we are responsible for it or else the deed will not transfer into my names.

My broker volunteered to pay half of this amount. Should I be responsible for these charges due to their mistake?

I work for a company in Pennsylvania that handles settlements on houses and issues title insurance. We had a similar issue not too long ago where WE, the settlement company, were actually responsible. I would ask to speak to a manager at the closing agent's company and let them know that it was their mistake, not yours and you don't feel that you should be responsible for that. We, the title company, had to wind up paying for our mistake on the situation similar to this, but I don't know how other title companys or settlement agents work. Hope that helps.
