What is the name of your state? Ohio

While looking for new employment, I was asked to submit to a Background Check. No problem to me, or so I thought. It came back "red". I called the company performing the check and they cannot verify my employer from the mid 1990's. Here is what went on, explaining it to them helped none.

Went to work for Company A, six months after I hired on Company B bought a number of Company A stores (mine included). One more year later, Company A bought out all of Company B's stores and changed the name to their own... Company B went out of business.

They wanted me to submit Tax records proving my employment. I had a house fire - total loss of all my possessions, including tax documents, about 7 years ago. I didn't get the job b/c I did not have the proof to give them.

How can I rectify this problem as most of the jobs I apply for are requesting Background Checks? I don't want to keep running in to this problem.
