I am female. However it has happened with males I know as well. Many californians go into Mexico to shop or sightsee or for weekends away. I have never heard of anyone being asked for custody papers or a passport.
 


I flew to Mexico this summer with a 3mo old and a 4yr old. Both directions I had to show a notarized letter stating that my husband gave me permission to travel out of the country. I had to show it checking in at the airports as well as imigration. It might be more strict at airports than just driving accross the border.

This is what we used, I have changed the names of course.

Whoops I just realized what you wrote and then re-read what I wrote, and I meant to say a notarized letter not a certified. Sorry.

Anyway the letter above is what I wrote and then he had it notarized by someone at his work.
