If an employer states you are to get paid for a federal holiday (specifically MLK recently)can they demand you actually work the day? Company policy states that you must work the day before and the day after to receive holiday pay, which is fine. We were told IF we did work, we would be paid double time and a half. I chose not to and have the day off instead and now they have marked me absent for the day! My main question is: Can they force you to work a federal legal holiday? Thanks for your help.

Generally speaking private employers can require their employees to work on federal holidays such as MLK. However, each state is different so you may want to speak to a labor law attorney near you. You can find one at attorneypages.com.
