What is the name of your state? CA

Maybe this isn't the correct place to ask this, however I truly respect most of your opinions and input and figured you all would know the answer :D

Would any of you recommend a particular website for online parenting classes? I am enrolling out of my own choice, I want to prove to the mediator and/or Judge that I have made every effort possible to be the best parent I can possibly be.

Oh... and is it better to take classes online or in person, or does it in your experience make a difference?

Thank you :)

What a coincidence...I was going to be looking into this, too, so I'd be very interested in some of the responses. Not because I was declared unfit, but given the circumstances of my situation & the age of the kids, I think it might be in the best interest. I will also be looking into whether I can hold the CP responsible for this cost.

Sorry...didn't mean to hijack the thread in anyway, if it appeared like that. ;)

What rationale do you have for attempting to make the cp responsible for parenting classes that you are choosing to take?

Unless you have some basis for that, that currently escapes me, I think a judge would laugh you out of the courtroom for making that request.

And in 'my' humble opinion.....I would certainly think it to look far more favorable that you take the parenting classes 'In Person'! To 'me', it would appear rather 'lazy', to take them over the Internet. Like, not 'sincere'. Like, just going through the motions. 'I' think, more impressive to do regular outside classes. Curious to hear what others might think about that.

That is a reasonable point and I don't disagree. Although so many classes are offered on the internet these days that its becoming more and more acceptable. I think it would partly depend on how well regarded the program was.

For example: If the internet class was a child development class sponsored by the state university...it probably would be equally regarded as any "in person" class.

Wow, making the CP responsible for the cost? I would pay money to have my ex take parenting classes!!! Currently I am the NCP.

I can see the point about going in person. That is why I was wondering if anyone knew of ones that are offered online that are well regarded by the courts.

Legalcuriosity - I wouldn't recommend making the CP responsible for cost because that might show you don't care enough about being a good parent to pay for it on your own (not saying that is the case, but it might appear that way). Maybe if you show you have attended on your own, the court will recommend that the CP go too and pay their own way? That is what I am hoping will be the outcome of mine (besides getting 50/50 custody).

Hi

I'm in NC and it is required in child custody cases here. The cost is only $50.00 here.. and it is worth it! I would have taken this class if I knew there was something offered like this without the order to do so. I know there are online courses, as a matter of fact there is an advertisement on this site called 'Win Custody" I think and on that link there are online courses. As far as I'm concerned, I feel you benefit far greater going in 'person' as you are with other parents going thru similar situations and it gives you a chance to interact with 'real live' others that know how you are feeling. It also allows you to question the parent 'coordinator' your concerns and they will give you answers, true answers, to alot of common issues. I can't imagine an online course that would help you like one on one will in a 'live course'. Good Luck:)

Possitive Parenting

There is a book called Possitive Parenting by Dr. Jane Nelson which is excellent. There are many courses taught nationwide based on her theories. The Mistaken Goals Chart in chapter 4 has changed my life.

Thank you :)

CPR & First Aid courses are also a great augmentation to parenting.

What strikes a judge (*IMO*) more than parenting classes is your HISTORY of effectively parenting. ie; If you've been a capable parent all along, a parenting class won't demonstrate anything more than your behavior already has proven through time. On the flip side; If you've been an absent parent- a parenting class won't make up for not having been there, or for not being an involved, fit parent.
