What is the name of your state? New Hampshire

My question is last April my wife had medical issues keeping her out of work for almost 2 years. During that time money got tight and our house went into foreclosure proceedings. The house never got foreclosed on because we sold it and paid off the loan. The problem is our credit reports are stating that the mort. went into foreclosure, and this is stopping us from getting another house.
Is it legal for the credit bureaus to report this as being foreclosed on? Please help and tell us if we need to hire a lawyer.
Thanx
