I have an idea for a product how do I go about a patent?

Your best bet is to talk with a patent attorney or agent. You can use google to find an agent in your area, or you can search the roster of resgistered patent agents and attorneys here: http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/dcom/olia/oed/roster/index.html

If you want to go it alone, you'll need to educate yourself -- it is much too time consuming to walk you through it over a message board. Start here: http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/utility/utility.htm

No matter what you do, do not contact any those companies you see on T.V. that offer help to inventors. Avoid those types of businesses at all cost. Nothing beats a good law firm that specializes in patents. Also visit the links to USPTO to get an idea of how things work and the process you will need to go through to get your patent filed.
