I agree, we should have had a written contract and I will never do a project again like this without one. But isn't it the contractor who is supposed to write up the contract?? And why would someone say they hope I am sued. The plumber did a crappy job and all I want is a meaningful reduction of the bill to reflect that.

As I suggested earlier, get yourself to a MASSACHUSETTS attorney who is familiar with MASSACHUSETTS contractor laws and MASSACHUSETTS consumer protection laws.

None of the self proclaimed experts have indicated any knowledge of the applicable laws.

Yes, please spend a couple of thousand dollars to protect the five hundred dollars you're trying to extract.

I don't think OP should be too concerned about the couple of thousand dollars the plumber will end up paying in legal fees.

Plumber has violated Massachusetts Consumer Protection laws. Plumber will end up paying legal fees.

Quite true I am not an attorney. But I am a Massachusetts resident and have hired a plumber or ten in my life. I know what is expected.

But it would likely be wise for the OP to consult with an attorney...;)

Please feel free to post actual law that supports your incorrect assertions.

the sink was leaking... It was cut about an inch and a half too short... We were horrified

Really? Did you see Cthulhu in there, or maybe some holocaust photos? The fact that you were "horrified" about a simple mistake that any professional could have made is telling. The fact that you want to weasel out of paying for an entire job (the sink installation) because of that small mistake is even more so.

I was going to try to lighten the mood by pointing out that it is rarely wise to get into a wrestling match someone that chases turds for living.
