What is the name of your state? New Jersey
I am posting this thread in an effort to help my sister-in-law, an immigrant from Transylvannia who is married to my husband's brother, an American. They have been married for about 5 months now and have an attorney who is working on her citizenship paperwork. I do not exactly what her status is at this point. Things seemed to be going ok-rocky as any new marriage, but ok. However, my BIL has become very verbally abusive to my SIL. He has not physically harmed her-yet. She is about 4 months pregnant and he seems to have snapped. He has kicked her out of their home, threatened to kill her, threatened to have her deported, and threatened to "steal" the baby. She has the threatening phone messages recorded. He has also told her that he got their attorney to take the money (most of which she paid) for the citizenship paperwork and put it toward a divorce. Can he do this? I didn't think so. She is now living with our other sister-in-law, her husband's sister. What are her options? Will she be forced to leave without the baby as he is threatening? He is unstable and would never be able to support or care for this child on his own. In all likelihood, my father-in-law would probably fight to keep the baby here if my SIL is deported. Could she be deported before the baby is born? Could she be deported after the baby is born? There is a horrible stigma attached to being an unwed mother from where she comes from. Such that it would be very difficult for her to make a life for herself and the baby. She fears that my BIL may harm her and/or the baby. Truthfully, so does the rest of the family. Are there any organizations that will help her regardless of her status at this point? Please help me be able to help my SIL. I am a new paralegal and have tried to find information similar to her situation, but have not had much luck. I appreciate any help you can offer.

Thank you very much for your help. I'm sure this will help. Just an update-my brother in law has been arrested for harrasment and terroristic threats against his wife and his sister (who has been helping his wife).
