primary residence

My job moved me to Nevada in sept. of 1996, and my wife stayed in our home in Oregon until August of 1997 at which
time we purchased a new home in Nevada. We still own the home in Oregon. My question is which home should I have claimed as my primary residence in 1997 for tax purposes

When? 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 or 2000? And for what purpose ie. Federal tax returns, voter registration, census info etc.
