Is the harrassment of any sort or just inconsiderate?
Is it harrassment or just plain inconsiderate that YOU are a complete MORON???
YES, it is inconsiderate for you to be a MORON.

It is also a shame that SHE has to work with a JACKA$$ like you.

Here is some good advice:
quit your job and go work at the local landfill; you will feel right at home with the garbage....!

Although the above posts have put it a little more strongly than I would have, they are, nonetheless, correct.

While I agree this is certainly not illegal, it sure is inappropriate. I'm female and I sure don't want a co-worker doing that at her desk. Yuck. Go to the ladies' room or a conference room where she can shut the door.

dean, I suggest you ask your supervisor if he/she will suggest to the lactating co-worker that it would be better if she did this in private and not in her cubicle in plain view of everyone. Honest-to-God, I can't imagine what she's thinking. Anyway, when you talk to your supervisor or the office manager or whomever, be NICE about it.

It is not harassment.
It is not illegal.
While it may be more appropriate to pump elsewhere, there may be reasons why that is not possible.
Gee, some guys get turned on by lactating women, is that your problem?
Lactation is the true purpose of breasts anyway.

Beth, why should she have to do that when she obviously IS trying to maintain her privacy; she sits in HER cubicle.
Having a wife who pumped for 6 months after each pregnancy, it is not conducive to the work environment to get up and go to the ladies room or conference room every 2 hours to pump.

Why is society so "Yuck" about a natural, healthy by-product of procreation???

It doesn't matter why. A few states require employers to provide a private, lockable room for employees to pump; I could not find anything in the NC law requiring it.

However, I have to agree with Beth on this one. I don't have a problem with mothers pumping when they need to; I just don't want to have to see it. And in a cubicle, there's every chance I can't avoid it.

If it is a distraction to other employees (whether you agree with whether it should be or not), then the employer needs to address the situation.

Beth, why should she have to do that when she obviously IS trying to maintain her privacy; she sits in HER cubicle. Exactly. A cubicle - not a private office with a door one can shut. I appreciate that individual sensitivities on this are going to differ but an employee pumping breast milk at her work station where others can see what she's doing is simply not appropriate and the vast majority of employers wouldn't allow it. They would ask the employee to use the lounge or a private room they made available for her use.

I mean honestly, can you really imagine having a business discussion with a co-worker while she's doing this? I sure can't.

I agree with you. The OP never stated that there WAS a locked room to use, or conference room with a door available.

If the "pumper" has a viable space available and is not using it, that is ridiculous. However, if the "pumper" has no other viable option and is making an attempt to be as discrete as possible, then what's the issue?

"That's What Breasts are for"
And I never thought I'd feel this way
And as far as I'm concerned
I'm glad I got the chance to say
That I do believe I hear you pumping

And if you should feel the need
Well then I'll close my eyes and try
To feel the way you do today
And then if you can remember

Keep smiling, keep pumping
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That's what breasts are for
For good times and bad times
I'll be in the next cubical, listening, forever more
That's what breasts are for

Well you came in engorged
And now there's so much more I see
And so by the way I thank you

Oh and then for the times when we're apart
Well then close your eyes and know
The words are coming from my heart
And then if you can remember
;)
