Most likely it will settle out of court and punitive damages will be dropped. Just a DUI usually isn't enough for them to be awarded anyway.

Thanks. I had told him that it would work out ok but he has been really worried. He really went off on a tangent after he found his mother dead. He tried to commit suicide last spring when his student loans and legal issues were piling up on him and he didn't think he could find a way out. He seems to have turned a corner now and I would hate to see him get derailed at this point. He said he would be willing to pay whatever was "fair" to the woman, even if it meant making monthly payments to her but he said he really just wants to find some way to put this behind him so he can go on with his life. It was a really difficult couple of years.
