What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Alabama

Hello, I want to start this off by saying that I haven't had my information stolen, I am just curious:

If my debit card (Visa, if it matters) information was stolen by someone from a foreign country (say, china for example), would I still be protected under law and be able to get my money back for the fraud?

I'm curious because I like to shop online, but always feel nervous about buying from overseas.

You would have to file a complaint with the police and your bank. The bank would then do an investigation and if found to be fraud the bank would return your money. It could take a few weeks.

There are several identity theft insurance products you can get which will protect you from situations like this.

While it is true you can file a dispute with your bank, it is better to avoid shopping at any site you don't trust. Personally, I would never buy from overseas companies, especially China or if the deal was really good. Way too many scams and often once they get your info, you end up spinning your wheels fixing it.

Actually, I would never use a debit card to make online purchases. A credit card is much better. It's only part of your line of credit tied up and not actual cash in your bank account.

If your Visa Debit card is lost or stolen and fraudulent activity occurs, you are protected by Visa's Zero Liability policy.* That means 100 percent protection for you. Whether purchases occur online or off, you pay nothing for fraudulent activity.

If you notice fraudulent activity on your Visa Debit card, promptly contact your financial institution to report it. It is important to continually monitor your monthly statement to identify any unauthorized transactions.

and this applies to the op how? Op was not talking about a stolen card but fraudulent activity due to stolen information. Not saying it wont cover the losses but simply pointing out that the fraudulent use of an actual card and the use of stolen information are two different things and looked at very differently by the banks and the law.
