What is the name of your state? Tennessee

I was revently pulled over in Brentwood Tennessee for a minor traffic violation (seat belt and speed 10 over). Upon being pulled over my car was searched and I turned over to the officer 12 grams of marijauna, two pipes, and a grinder. However I was only charged with seatbelt infraction and possession (specifically simple possession Sch. 6 39.111.718). The officer told me the court date and gave me my papers and let me on my way. Upon filling out paperwork he told me that I would not be contacted in any way except through the papers that were given to me. These papers stated my court date and charge. I am a legal adult of 19 years old and a college student I was going to pay all of my charges and serve time without hassling my family about the situation. I felt it was for the better, however about two hours after the incident I recieved a call from my mother in Maryland and she told me that the officer had contacted her and told her the entire situation of what had occured and what I was being charged with. I would like some help and especially I was curious that if by making this phone call to my mother the officer was breaking procedure and confidentiality? Any help would be much appreciated I would just like to know whether my rights of confidentiality were infracted upon by this officer making the phone call to my mother even though I am no longer a minor and a legal adult.

If the laws in TN are similar to everywhere else, the circumstances of your citation and arrest are matters of public record. And if the car you drove was registered to her, she might have had a vested interest in hearing that her car was being used to transport a controlled substance.

It might not be the best idea to call mom ... but sometimes, it can be the most effective means of preventing a repeat offense.

In MO all the cases become public record once the prosecutor "files" the charges. And I agree with CdwJava IF it's her car that gives her legal right to know...in MO you would have lost your license, and they would have been calling your mother to see where she wanted it towed!

Poster, there are additional facts that are not indicated in your post. The most glaring ommission would be the means the officer had to even know who your mother was, and certainly for that officer to know she was in another state.

Given all that you went through. Wouldn't you agree that were you arrested for the drug charge, your Mom would have found out about that?

In this instance, try counting your blessings. You would have been scolded or "shamed" by you Mom if you had been arrested for the drug charge. This way you have only been "shamed" without the criminal record and the attending life's difficulties as a result.

Continue as you please.

What I find very interesting in this entire scenario is that Brentwood is notorious for stopping people for minor infractions. Everyone who has spent time there knows it and knows that on Franklin Pike, Old Hillsboro or Old Hickory, you just don't speed.

In fact, I wave every morning (when in town) as I go from Green Hills on Old Hillsboro to Franklin because the same Sheriff's deputy is parked in the Church parking lot across from the UPS store drinking his coffee and stopping people who aren't too bright.

And on Franklin Pike the favorite spots are at the Franklin Animal Hospital or closer to the I-65 onramp at the Shell Station.

What's also funny is that for the years I've been here, I have never been stopped for anything. Guess that lead foot got you in a little trouble son.:D:D:D
