What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? wisconsin. recently a large clinic started recording patient conversations without their permission to "improve patient care" by the staff. staff feels it is more of big brother watching the staff. patients offer confidential info. is the clinic policy legal?

Recording conversations with the knowledge and implied consent of the recorded parties is, in most jurisdictions, legal.

However, this is a medical clinic and the information being recorded is of a medical nature. These recordings MIGHT be classified as medical records under HIPAA. I say might because I'm not sure and because HIPAA is, IMHO, loosely written. So, if we suppose the recordings are considered records under HIPAA, then the clinic might run afoul of the privacy and disclosure sections of the act. Then again, maybe not.

Outside of that, I'd have to say you're SOL.

WI is a one party state so it is legal to record and a common practice to improve customer service. If you ae doing your job, you should have no problem.
