sounds like you are in a very similar situation to what I was in. In our case, the gp filed gp visitation and would have gotten it if they hadn't screwed up with their temp visitation plan. but, they had been exercising mom's visitation for 6 years and had an established reputation

You'd think the courts would frown on this kind of stuff. I get the feeling grandparents get themselves confused with parents quite a bit. There is a BIG difference.

In my case, we are trying a contested step parent adoption. Father, who has never really seen the child but has paid child support, is standing on his legal ground to contest us.

If we are denied, I will be standing on my legal ground against grandparent to raise my child as I wish.

Personally? I would ask for visits to be just a couple of hours at a time, a couple of times a week. If the visits prove stressful for the child, that will be the most constructive. Then, when its observed child is ok and comfortable, they expand in length.
