What is the name of your state? NY

I have been discriminated against on the basis of religion by a privately funded non-religious 501 c 3 educational institution. I want to stop this practice. Since I believe the board of directors would not support this behavior, I want to find a government agency to initiate an action. If they don't back down, I want to hire a lawyer. What agency deals with this and how do I find a lawyer who is knowledgeable about this field? Thanks. What is the name of your state?

On what basis do you think you have a suit? The First Amendment? Because that only applies to government entities and not private. Details would help. As in what do you believe the religious discrimination is/was?

Actually, this is a nonprofit institution that teaches martial arts and provides certifications for instructors that are internationally recognized.

They advertise themselves as a non-religious organization. I trained there for close to 30 years and received various certifications to teach. I opened a school that was recognized by them as valid.

A senior instructor subsequently told me they lied and the organization ultimately is a religious one (although the owner and board of directors does not know this currently). He told me I had to convert to this newfangled religion and participate in their scheme to convert everyone else their to this (I want to say) cult. Again, knowledge that this is supposedly a religious group is strictly secretive, and conversion is done by trickery over long periods of time. Since I refused, they have shown an interest in throwing me out of the school so I can no longer continue learning & developing, and taking other actions as necessary to destroy my current school (which I own privately). Without offering internationally recognized certifications to my own student, a benefit of being within their organizaton, the prospects for my school are dismal at best.

I want to expose them for what they are and stop them from behaving in this manner. The institution is open to the public, it is an educational institution, and it is subject to the health club services law. I am not a lawyer, but I was hoping to get them on discrimination based upon religion (and possibly national origin due to the fact that the intrinsic nature of the religion favors Japanese) in an educational institution, evicting someone from a public place based upon religious discrimination and deception in the sales process related to the health club services laws. There are probably some other commerce oriented laws applicable here. I just don't know enough about where to look for them. How do you find a lawyer if you don't know what area of the law is involved???

Thanks.

This doesn't sound promising. If they're yahoos, why should I use them? Also, are you saying there is no merit to my case? Thanks.

They are the (only) NY State organization which handles religious discrimination claims. I call them yahoos because it's filled with a bunch of bleeding heart liberals who see discrimination in everything, whether it's actually there or not. So, you should have some excellent results filing a complaint with them.

I'm going to need a lawyer as a back up plan. What area of the law is relevant to this situation and where can I find an attorney with that sort of knowledge? Thanks.

I already spoke to an attorney who focused on employment discrimination. He was not familiar at all with the laws for education. He had to do a lot of research just to figure out what laws to consider/ The box on my left asks for a topic. Which topic would lead me to a lawyer who does not have to reinvent the wheel to deal with this case. Thanks.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say "education"? It's not my website & I don't know what results come up for searches. You can always try that Bar Association thing too - they may be better able to ascertain your needs.
