Reverse CA adoption from 1978

Hi, my stepfather adopted me in 1978 (maybe 1979). They didn't let me visit my biological father who was married to my mother 'till I was 5. They bribed him with the removal of past due child support and made a false accusation of abuse in order to get his signature. I have contact with my biological father, but missed 24 years with him.

My stepfather abused me from the age of 6-12 and then my mother made me live with him even after finding out when I was 12... until I was 16 and went to boarding school. She's just cry about how "God had forgiven him, why can't I". Needless to say, I do not want him name on my birth certificate for emotional/personal reasons and want to have this adoption "set aside" or reversed. I actually have a copy of the adoption papers... I got them a long time ago and have them filed (finalized in San Luis Obispo county, CA).

When I was 16 I told them SS office I hated him and showed them those adoption papers. They have me my SS in my original last name... same with the DMV... they have my original last name on my driver's license.

I had a daughter alone and her VA birth certificate has my original last name on it. In addition, I gave her my last name since the biological father was not around.

I would really appreciate any information on how I can reverse this adoption.

You probably can't - and even if you could, it would take a long time and cost a lot of money. Spend the money on a good therapist and do a legal name change and then put it behind you.

Yes, I always forget that adult adoptions can do something like that.

Probably because I think adult adoptions are a stupid, self-centered waste of time about 97.3% of the time.

An adoption cannot simply be reversed...but you are going to have to do something because its going to cause you trouble later on down the road if your name on your BC doesn't match your name with the SSA.

You could talk to an adoption attorney about the possibility of an adult adoption and its ramifications (not possible in all states) or you could go through the process to legally change your last name to your birth last name, which would eliminate potential problems down the road.
