Illinois law states any child within 1.5 miles of school are considered to have a safe walk to school. Does it apply to children with Asthma and Allergy? Are elementary children with Asthma expected to walk more than 1 miles to school by themselves? What if a 6 years old walking alone has an anaphylaxis to a bee sting or another allergen or an asthmatic child has an asthma attack? Are they eligible for bus service?

How about other states?

Thanks. R Tray

If you're concerned about your child walking by themselves, pay someone to walk with them or take them to and from school everyday.

The school district can't be more responsible for YOUR OWN CHILD than you're willing to be.

A lot of "what if ..." situations can be asked about a walk to school. We can all create a hypothetical situation in which any child is at risk. I suspect the free ride will happen only if IL state law or district policy mandates that kids with such conditions get a ride to school on district paid transportation.

As a note, I was both allergic to bee stings AND asthmatic - and I was allergic to 95% of those substances I was tested for - when I was a child, and when I was in school I survived a 0.6 mile walk to elementary school, a 1.6 mile walk to junior high school, and 2 mile walk to high school without ever suffering an asthmatic or serious allergic episode or bee sting. If you are that concerned, drive your child to school or arrange for a friend to do so.
